Energy Minister orders 200 new transformers to fix power outages

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has directed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to urgently install 200 new transformers across the country’s major cities. This move is aimed at strengthening Ghana’s electricity distribution system and easing public frustration over recent power outages.
The announcement came during the opening of the 2025 West African Mining and Power Expo (WAMPEX) held in Accra on Wednesday, May 28. Jinapor said the measure is part of the government’s broader strategy to improve energy reliability and meet growing electricity demand from homes and industries.
“I have granted approval to the ECG to, as a matter of urgency, inject about 200 new transformers in our major capital cities in order to ensure that we do not just generate power, but we’re able to transmit and distribute it effectively and efficiently,” he stated.
Jinapor noted that while electricity generation has recently stabilized, the real challenge lies in ensuring efficient transmission and distribution. “What we need to do is to continue to improve the transmission network and the distribution network,” he added.
The new transformers are expected to reduce the pressure on the existing power grid and help prevent frequent localized outages. The Minister said the installations will also support the government’s long-term goal of building a more resilient energy system.
“I’m happy to note that despite the challenges we inherited, the recent report I got is that recent power generation has been stable, and we have even begun exporting some power,” Jinapor said.
He cited Ghana’s electricity exports to neighboring countries as a sign of growing strength in power generation but stressed that this progress must be matched by improvements in infrastructure at home.
As the government pushes forward with its green transition and energy goals, Honorable John Jinapor assured stakeholders that investments in the sector would continue, particularly in distribution systems that directly impact consumers.
