NPP flagbearer race: ‘I cannot publicly campaign for anyone because I am a leader’ — Afenyo-Markin

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament has made it clear that he will not campaign for any of the National Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirants in the upcoming presidential primary. He drew to attention that he needs to act as a person to bring people together instead of supporting a particular candidate only.
During the time he was speaking on JoyFM on Monday, October 27, 2025, Alexander Afenyo-Markin stated that even though a lot of his fellow members in Parliament have clearly shown who they support concerning the flagbearer aspirants but he believes that when he maintain impartiality it will help preserve his credibility and bring the party together after they are done with the internal election.
He emphasized that “As a leader, I cannot openly say I am going to campaign for any particular person and this is because of role as the Minority leader. I have to stay neutral. My role after that will be to help bring the party members together and that requires my not publicly taking sides.”
He highlighted that when he reveals his personal preference it will can undermine his ability to bring people together and help them settle their differences. Due to that, he stated that if I show my hand now, it will be very difficult for me to then need to bring people together later. That’s why it is appropriate to remain neutral.
Alexander Afanyo Markin also praised his fellow members who have already openly showed who they are supporting. He also said they are handling things in a calm and respectful way.
He explained that “So far the Members of Parliament (MPs) who have openly showed who they support have really conducted themselves differently. Initially, I had concern about how those who go public how they would handle it, but they have many been able to manage things.”
Alexander Afenyo-Markin reaffirmed his previous call for Members of Parliament (MPs) and the members of the party to stay calm and focus on staying united rather than division during the primary. He added that “to be a credible referee trusted by all sides, it’s best to stay neutral or at least not make your choice public.”
He also quoted that some of his fellow colleagues members disagreed with him but he made it clear that he respect their right to openly support whork those they believe in.
