Residents of Sekondi-Takoradi face severe water shortages due to erratic rationing, disrupting daily life. Learn more about the crisis, its impact, and the call for urgent solutions. In communities such as Pariscoa, Sekondi, one of the most affected areas where residents say they have endured  for months without running water.

The Impact on Daily Life

A frustrated resident, Jennifer Akakpo declared that “Access to water is a significant problem. dirty laundry is mounting due to water shortage  and our children have to search for water before school, making them late. Even when we depend on water tankers, deliveries can take days to arrive. We encourage the government to find solution to the crisis.” Another resident namely Devine Adjot, expressed similar concerns . He drew to attention that water supply in his area is delivered only once every three to seven months.

Devine Adjoto emphasized that “When it comes residents in low-lying areas occasionally get some water but those in elevated areas get no supply. Most of us now rely entirely on sachet water.”

Theresa Buah also described the issue, saying “even the elderly have to go fetch water themselves due to the shortage.”

Financial Toll

Augustina Blankson added that her community has gone five month without water, monthly bills continue to arrive, despite no water supply. We buy a gallon for GHS2.5, but when water finally comes, it stops quickly. The crisis is unbearable.” Ewura Adutwumwaa also highlighted the financial toll, saying, “I spend GHS10 daily for just four gallons. How much does that add up to in a month? What is my salary? This crisis is affecting everything, even flushing toilets.”

She asked that “I sometimes threaten to destroy the water bill before them. How can we be charged during times of water shortage?

Causes of the Crisis

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has recognized the issue pointing to range of underlying causes including pollution from illegal mining (galamsey), old and inefficient water infrastructure, and other systematic hurdles. As frustrations mount, residents are calling for long-term and effective solutions to restore consistent and reliable water supply to the region.
