Storm Alert! Ghana to Face Increased Winds, Thunders, and Lightning in Rainy Season
Ghana Braces for Stormy Weather: Meteorological Agency Warns of Increased Winds, Thunders, and Lightning
The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued a warning about the impending increase in winds, thunders, and lightning as the country moves closer to the main rainy season.
According to Joshua Asamoah, a senior meteorologist at GMet, although light rains are expected in the build-up to the season, the period will be significantly marked by more intense weather phenomena.
Speaking at a stakeholder and media training workshop on the VOLTALARM Early Warning System, Asamoah emphasized the need for public vigilance and preparedness. “As we approach the main rainy season, there will be light rains.
However, the precursor to these rains will include more winds, thunders, and lightning. It’s crucial for the public to seek safe shelter during these times to protect themselves,” he advised.
The workshop highlighted the VOLTALARM Early Warning System, a collaborative development between GMet and its partners aimed at providing early warning signals for floods and droughts to residents within Ghana’s Volta basins.
This initiative is part of the broader Volta Flood and Drought Management (VFDM) project, which involves Ghana and its neighboring countries around Volta Lake, designed to mitigate the impact of floods and droughts in the region.
The system is particularly critical for communities along the Volta basins, who are vulnerable to the annual opening of the Bugre Dam in Burkina Faso.

By improving capacity and collaboration among stakeholders, including the media, the initiative aims to enhance community preparedness against natural disasters.
Furthermore, Asamoah revealed plans for the development of a Multi-Hazard Warning System, which will extend beyond the Volta basin to offer updates and potentially save lives in other regions of the country.
The meteorologist called on the public to remain attentive to weather forecasts and updates from GMet. With climate change leading to more unpredictable and extreme weather conditions, staying informed and prepared is more important than ever for planning daily activities and ensuring safety.
This announcement comes at a critical time as the nation prepares for the main rainy season, underlining the importance of advanced planning and awareness to mitigate the adverse effects of severe weather.
