Just In: Mankessim Drivers, Traders Resist Eviction from Market
Some traders and drivers in the Mankessim market staged a demonstration to drive home their displeasure at the Municipal Assembly’s insistence that they move out of the market to pave way for construction works.
According to the demonstrators, they were not consulted during the decision making process before they were told to move out of the market. This, according to them, is disrespect to them and a way to kick them out without any considerations of their opinions. They also accused the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Mfatseman Municipal Assembly, Mr Kenneth Kelly Essuman, for pursuing inimical agenda against the electorates.
The Municipal Assembly had asked occupants and patrons of the market to move out for construction and expansion works to be done in the market. However, in a press conference today, the chairman of GPRTU, taxi local Efo Red said “We will never move to any place until a befitting lorry park worth working has been given us as promised by the MCE”. They said if the assembly wants to use force to get them out of the place, they will resist anyway possible, even to death.
These some some voice shots of some of the demonstrators:
Reacting to the story the MCE Hon. Essuman debunked the issue of not consulting the unions in the decision- making process. He said he is not moved by detractors and promised that he will do everything thing possible to have the market constructed to enviable standard.
